http://forums.stevehoffman.tv/threads/restored-pink-floyd-at-pompeii-and-new-adrian-maben-floyd-documentary-at-montreal-film-festival.330776/

"Adrian has prepared a new Pink Floyd documentary called Chit Chat With Oysters, which will screen for the first time at the same festival, on Oct 11th at 9pm and again on the 14th at 1pm. This documentary is culled from black and white footage shot in December 1971 at the Europa-Sonor studio in Paris, when the band was mixing and overdubbing the Pompeii multitrack. You will have seen about 8 minutes of this footage in the Director's Cut DVD of Pompeii, but this new documentary runs almost 60 minutes long."

"I asked Adrian about the possibility of a Pompeii Blu-Ray earlier in the year, and he said there is some general want in the Floyd camp to do it but that it won't happen until a 5.1 mix can be done of the film, and the 5.1 mix can only be done by James Guthrie who is busy with the 5.1 mix of The Wall. Adrian said a possible solution is that one of Guthrie's assistants could do the mix with James overseeing the final result, but that nothing had come of it yet."

Very Happy

Very Happy

Live at Pompeii - Montreal screening of additional material
21 octobre 2013, 17:50

BD visitor Geoffroy Le Roux was at the recent Montreal screenings of Live at Pompeii and the additional material which was presented as "Chit Chat With Oysters". Here's his run-down of what was seen, and what Adrian Maben said about it all...

*About the movie:*

It's 50 minutes of black & white footage, 16mm, 1.33 ratio. It features the whole 5 cans of reversible film Adrian found in an old box in his Paris apartment bathroom in 2001, and some footage of the restored Pompeii movie. You already saw 10 minutes of it in the Pompeii 2003 Director's Cut. And be aware, what you saw previously is really made of the most interesting bits. This documentary shows the rest basically. It features:

- David and Rick attempts to overdubs the Echoes vocals. Especially the first verses. 5 or 6 false start, break down, fucks-up. Roger is in the control room with Nick (but you can't see them), listening to the whole thing and directing the session («Wrong words», «You added an "and" at this place, there isn't any»,etc.). Between takes, David just want to mess around with Adrian (by saying loudly «shit!», or singing «Strangers passing in the street» with an awful French accent). After a few takes, they seems annoyed by the camera while they are working. Especially David who takes the first opportunity to go back into the control room. The whole thing lasts... 8minutes?

- David playing Echoes guitar parts alone, sitting in a chair. Mainly the funky parts over and over with the camera trying to film something else on him each time.

- It features the whole film rolls, slate call included (well, there isn't a clapperboard, it is just some kind of crude sound marker, with a guy bumping into the microphone while the camera films him, and go back to film the band). The camera crew is French obviously (they speaks French only).

- Adrian waste a lot of time asking them (in different ways) if they think that technology is helping them too much. They basically says «Rubbish», but Adrian insists, and their answers are variation on «This is

ridiculous».

- You thought Roger was obfuscating the interviews? Oh no. What you saw was him warming up. He was determined to not give any kind of information at all. He was hilarious IMO. Adrian thought so too (he told us that Roger is «Incredible, he takes so much times to say absolutely nothing whatsoever»). He has fun, find the questions irrelevant, and basically don't want to answer anything. But in a good spirits.

- According to Adrian, it was filmed on a same day. It was improvised totally. He asked them if he could film them, they said yes. He was aware that they didn't want to do interviews, but he managed to make them sits one at the time in the studio corridor, in front of a glass door (this is a shitty environment for an interview). Between the first roll of films and the last one, only 3 hours passed (Adrian managed to film 30-40 min and that's it. Everything is included.)

- Some questions were «In what school were you, and why did you dropped out». Nick and Rick gave interesting answers. Nick could basically come back at school anytime if the band didn't worked out, the headmaster likes him a lot because he was a good student. Rick was booted out (he hated that school anyway).

- «Did you saw any concert films that you liked?». They all liked Woodstock (note: this is one of the very few piece of information Roger provides in his attempt to block the whole process). Rick, Nick and David

loved the Joe Cocker movie «Mad Dogs and Englishmen», they speak highly of this movie. David added «200 Motels» by Frank Zappa to his favourites.

- And that's pretty much it. The best-of bits in the Pompeii Director's Cut really shows what needs to be seen. The rest is basically some desperate attempts by Adrian to have some interviews (the only serious

answers were on the 2003 feature), and the band obfuscating it while laughing. The studio bits are interesting though, you see them being really obsessive over tiny details (even if in this case, it's only vocal overdubs). It took ages for them to overdubs only one verse of Echoes, I can really see why their albums took so much times to make.

*About the Pompeii footage inserted in the documentary:*

You already saw it all. There isn't an alternate Echoes footage in it. They are used to make linking segment between the footage, it is mainly them walking around Pompeii. Sorry to disappoint some, but there isn't any

outtakes from Pompeii in it at all.

*About the Blu-Ray:*

- Universal are now the sole owner of the film rights, and that make things a lot easier then before.

- Adrian met Nick during the last Roger concert 3 months ago. They talked about it, and Nick said «It's gonna happen». But, Adrina said that it's been ages that the band keep saying «It's gonna happen». Classic

Pink Floyd Ladies and Gentlemens

- The multitracks is indeed safe and sound. The whole 16 tracks. The band wants James Guthrie to do the remix, but he's been extremely busy on many other Pink Floyd projects for quite some time. And he's late. Pompeii will happen, but first James has allegedly a lot of things to complete first.

- The band see no point in rushing it. It will happen, but when? No-one knows. Adrian jokingly said that he hopes it's gonna happen in his lifetime.

- Universal could make the things go faster, but then again it's complicated. The whole thing will go on if the band and Universal agrees on it.

*About the quadraphonic soundtrack:*

- I talked privately to Adrian about it. Exclusive for Yeeshkul!

- The quad master has been located! It's in good shape too

- Yes, it was officially made for him at the time. He owns the right to it (Well, Universal does anyway)

- He wasn't aware that the fans discovered it and restored it. At first he was suspicious («Oh really? Oh, are you sure it is the real thing and not some upmixing? How come they have it?») I explained about the 4 track magnetic 35mm print, the scan process and the restoration. I told him I listened to it, and that it was definitely something that could be used for an eventual release. He seems interested and curious about it. Now, he knows it's on the internet.

*About Pompeii:*

- They only had 4 cameras. 3 very heavy-one, and one lighter.

- «One of These Days» has always been made to be a Nick Mason centered piece. There wasn't any «lost footage» accident about it. 3 cameras were on Nick, and one on David. In 2003, he tried to locate the 4th camera footage, but it was lost with the rest of the outtakes.

- At first, Adrian wanted to film Astronomy Domine, A Saucerful of Secrets, Careful With That Axe Eugene, Set The Controls For The Heart Of The Sun in Pompeii. The filming planning was already done. The night before the first shooting day, Steve O Rourke came into Adrian's room in Italy with a Meddle acetate. He said to Adrian that «We wanna do these songs. I want to promote the album». Echoes and One of These Days were planned the night before, at the very last minute. That's why the shooting fell through after three days (they had to go elsewhere, but they spend so much time filming those two new songs that the whole schedule fell apart), and why they had to go to Paris to film what remains.

- Steve O Rourke did it again in Paris! «We want to promote Meddle with a third song. With a dog». He was the manager after all, right?

- There isn't any outtakes whatsoever. Yeah we knew about it, but he confirmed it again. There is nothing.

- Adrian is absolutely aware of what the fans and critics alike thinks of the 2003 cut. «Devastating reviews» he said. I think it is the last time we'll heard of it (the 1974 is basically the Pompeii movie now).

*About the band:*

- Adrian said that up until DSOTM release, they were very interested in working with movies. He said he was aware of them working with Schroeder, Antonioni, and Kubrick. Roger told him that Kubrick really tried to have Pink Floyd music in his films, but in the end it obviously didn't work.

- According to him, after DSOTM, the band changed. They were very interested in doing super-shows (with screens, inflatable things, etc.), like a giant multimedia experience. It couldn't be filmed really according to him. Also, the band wanted for people to come and experience that. That's why there is so few footage from them after March 1973 up until 1981. The band were not interested in movies anymore, thought that a movie could not work with what they did, and didn't need to because it was something of an all-senses experience to live.

- He didn't feel any tension within the band. He didn't witness drugs-use either.

- He remains a good acquaintance of Roger. He even filmed him in his kitchen trying to work out Ca Ira over a number of years. What happened to this footage is unknown.

*About the future:*

- If he's still alive, he would like to project the movie in the original Pompeii theater they played in, for the 50th anniversary of the movie. It's a vague project, but he thinks it will come full-circle that way. He also said that the theater could hold 5000 people. This is just a silly idea he had, but he's interested.
